This is a TWO-STEP assignment and both steps must be on separate documents. The requirements are specific

read carefully. I will provide examples of everything that must be completed. ALL THE WORK BEING DONE
IS ONLY FROM
PAGES 48-120 OF THE GREAT GATSBY.
Step 1 (document 1):
The Journal should be written as a double-entry journal with your record of the important things you read on pages 48-120 of The Great Gatsby in the left-hand column* and your questions, inferences, connections, and analysis in
the right-hand
column.
**AN EXAMPLE FROM ANOTHER BOOK OF HOW TO COMPLETE AND FORMAT THE JOURNAL ENTRIES IS
ATTACHED BELOW, FOLLOW THAT AS THE GUIDELINE AND HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF ENTRIES WITH THE
SAME AMOUNT OF DETAIL AND SENTENCES PER ENTRY.**
Based ONLY on pages 48-120, your entries focus should be on characterization unlike the example attached below so make sure do not write the same ideas as the example, the examples prompt is NOT CHARACTERIZATION, it’s
different. You need to answer: Which characters are dynamic or static? Which are round or flat? Identify the
protagonist and antagonist. What
are they like? Does your protagonist have a foil? If so, which traits does the foil
highlight? Does your narrator use indirect or direct characterization? Which is more effective and why? Has the
author created any unlikable characters? Why do you
think the author may have made this choice? MAKE SURE TO ANSWER ALL THESE IN THE ENTRIES.
REMEMBER:
1. As you read PAGES 48-120 OF THE GREAT GATSBY, jot down some thoughts. These thoughts should include:
– questions that you have about plot, characterization, theme, language, and symbolism – you are going to be
asked to focus on character in THE SYNTHESIS ESSAY BELOW. While it shouldn’t be the only thing you write about
in your journal, do ensure you are making observations and drawing conclusions about the way characters are
being developed.
– connections you’re able to make to your own life, other texts, and the world around you.
– analyses of literary devices, including use of language, metaphor, symbolism, imagery.
– conclusions that you’re able to draw about choices made by the author.
*Don’t forget to include page numbers for each entry. This will help you in STEP 2*
Step 2 (document 2):
This is the essay or the SYNTHESIS PAPER. Now that you’ve made journal entries on PAGES 48-120 OF THE GREAT GATSBY, you will piece together what you’ve learned and currently understand about the novel. This SYNTHESIS
PAPER is not meant to be a summary of what you’ve read; rather, it is meant to be a record of the conclusions (and
supporting evidence) you have been able to draw so far based on your reading. While you are not limited to
discussing characterization, you should mention it at some point in your paper. Consider using the outline attached below labelled “Synthesis Paper Outline” to help structure and organize your response.
Make sure to follow these criteria: – Feel free to go beyond 500 words. – Properly formatted in-text citations for
quotations or specific references to the text – Makes specific reference to ideas developed in the journal and
explains how these ideas were supported, challenged, or otherwise evolved – Draws conclusions about the choices made by the author – Identifies significant ideas in a text. – Makes connections between the text and own
experiences. *EXAMPLE OF SYNTHESIS PAPER FROM ANOTHER BOOK IS ATTACHED BELOW, USE IT AS
GUIDELINE AND FORMAT IT EXACTLY THE SAME. BE AS DETAILED AS THE EXAMPLE AND HAVE THE SAME
AMOUNT OF PARAGRAPHS, DETAILS ETC. IT IS CRUCIAL TO FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE IN FORMATTING,
DETAILING AND WORDING BUT OF COURSE WRITE IT ABOUT PAGES 48-120 OF THE GREAT GATSBY*
