For this post, you will read one section of the paper: Assessing effects of non-native crayfish on mosquito survival
This is a primary research article and as such, it may be challenging to read. In order to help you better understand the original article, I’d recommend you read the UCLA IoES summary before tackling this assignment. Primary research refers to a paper written by a scientist or team of scientists that communicates their unique experiment to the public.

This assignment requires two posts, each completed individually.
First Post – Due Thursday
Each person in your group will read one of the four sections listed above, selected on a first-come, first-serve basis (NO credit for duplicate posts!). It is strongly recommended that you make a placeholder post to avoid multiple students reading and posting about the same section. You may reply to your placeholder post with your responses to the prompts.
Title your post with your chosen section (e.g., Introduction, Methods, etc.), then answer the following:
Explain three major points of your section of the article (each point should be 2-3 sentences; bullet-point format is fine).
Define at least two vocabulary words or phrases from the section you read. These can be any words/phrases that you didn’t know the meaning of. (Examples: trophic cascades, ecosystem services, benthic, etc.)
Based on the reading of your section, what are two questions you have? These may be something you need clarification on, technical questions, questions about the diets, methods, or broader questions about the article. Try to avoid posing questions that can be answered with a simple search.
Highlight an aspect of the reading that you found interesting and explain how it relates to what you’ve learned in this week’s module (3-4 sentences).

Now, you will focus on one animal species that has been found in one or both soft-bottom regions of the LA River. You need select one of the species listed in the table below.

Each student from your group will need to select a unique animal species from the species list in the table, so make sure that you look at all of the posts that have been submitted in order to make sure that you do not choose the same species as someone else. You will be focusing on this species for the rest of the assignments for the LA River Project, so choose carefully!.

Tips for selecting a species:
Pick a species that sounds interesting to you.
Take a look at the iNaturalist species pages to see how much is known about a species before you select it — this will help you determine if you will be able to find enough information about the biology and ecology of that species to complete the Individual Species Research assignment.
Post Requirements:
Taxonomic group, common name, and scientific name of your species
Post a photo of your species. To receive full credit, you must include a properly-formatted attribution (like a citation for images and videos) for the image. See the image above for an example and check out the helpful resources below for tips on how to find images and attribute the source of the image. Be sure to insert the images into the discussion post, rather than adding them as attachments to your reply.
A link to at least one credible source of information about your species.
Is your species native or introduced to Los Angeles County?
Wait, what are native and introduced species? A species is native to an area if it occurs there ‘naturally’, meaning due only to local natural evolution. An introduced species is a species that is not native to an area, but rather was transported to that location area by humans or due to human activity. For the purposes of this project, migratory birds are considered to be native species.
To determine if if it is native or introduced to Los Angeles County, click on one of the iNaturalist observations of your species that was made in either of the soft-bottom stretches of the river. If it is an introduced species, you will see a magenta exclamation mark icon after the species name. (See red arrow pointing to the icon in the image below.)

Reading assignments involve the following:
Read the assigned chapters. You can see which chapters we’re discussing at the top of each module overview page and each reading discussion assignment.
Choose a second source. Each chapter has a list of sources. Select one of these to read or listen to, with the goal of connecting the ideas in the assigned chapters to the ideas in the second source. Sources may include:
One of the research papers cited. You do not need to understand every word of the research paper in detail; instead, your goal is to understand what question the paper posed and what answer is found. Read the introduction and conclusion first, and if you need more information to understand them, read the middle sections of the paper. The links in the chapters should work on campus; to access these when you are away from campus, use the UW Libraries off-campus proxy (Links to an external site.).
A chapter from one of the books cited. You do not need to read the whole book; read the book’s Introduction or the 1st chapter. To access these, you may be able to find excerpts on Google Books or the digital copies at UW Libraries; some books are freely available online if you search. Expect to do a bit of work to retrieve the book text. But it’s worth it! Books can be far more engaging than research papers.
A podcast. Many chapters include a list of relevant podcasts, most of which have transcripts. Listen to the podcast or read its transcript. All of these should be available for free and range from 20-60 minutes in length.
Participate in a Reading Discussion.
Write a post reflecting on what you have learned from ONE of the two assigned chapters. Your initial post should include four short paragraphs, responding to these four prompts:
Paragraph 1. Name the chapter you are selecting for your reflection. What was an idea you found interesting, surprising, or confusing in the Foundations of Information chapter you chose? Describe the idea and why it resulted in one or more of these reactions.
Paragraph 2. In your additional source, what was an idea that you found interesting, surprising, or confusing? Describe the idea and why it resulted in one or more of these reactions.

Instructions
The American Family has undergone many changes throughout the years. These changes have shaped what defines a family as well as how a family functions. Create a Power Point presentation or a FREE Prezi Presentation (www.prezi.com) that shows a timeline of changes that have impacted the American Family. (For the free version of Prezi, simply click “Get Started”, then navigate over to the “Basic” instead of “Individual or Teams” and you will see the free version.)
Your timeline must include a minimum of 8 events. Each event is to be identified by time period/date, the event being chronicled and the impact of the event on the American Family. Your presentation must include a cover slide and a reference slide. Your information must be supported by a minimum of 2 references. Please see the grading rubric below.

Presentation provides in-depth, accurate information depicting 8 important events that have impacted the American Family. Each event is clearly identified and the impact on the family is defined. .
Presentation is creative & unique, with uncluttered slides that are well-organized and easy to read. There is use of color and/or transitions. Information is enhanced with the use of visuals.
Information is presented in clear writing style using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation.
A title slide is included at the beginning of the presentation. A reference slide is included at the end of the presentation that contains at least 2 references listed in APA format. Appropriate citations are included in the presentation

Please provide a brief personal statement explaining the circumstances resulting in your interruption in studies which prevented you from meeting the eligibility requirements. Introduction to Government
For your Week 1 discussion, please try the simulation game, (https://www.cybernations.net/). What I want you to do is look at how the different systems (religion and tax, etc.,) and governance structures affect your nation. As you will see there are different options that will lead to different outcomes. Please be creative and have fun–and try different approaches.
Your discussion question for this week is: Why do you think different government systems exist and why do nations make diverse choices rather than all using uniformed systems of government?
To receive full credit, the post must be original and well-developed (at least 200 words), and you must 3) refer back to the corresponding chapter from the text in your response.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate an understanding of how management has changed and evolved over the past 50 years. Research major legislation that provided employee protections and workplace safety, technological advancements, management styles, etc.
How does today’s business world differ from that of the 1970s? What do you think is different about being a manager today, vs. then? What has not changed? Your paper should be at least three pages, excluding an Abstract and References. It often takes four or five pages to do justice to this topic. Use at least one external resource, in addition to the Bateman textbook. Use APA citation, formatting and referencing conventions.
